Not even 10 games into the new NBA season and Andrew Bogut is still coming to grips with his new situation in Dallas.Bogut is currently on track to experience more losing in one season with the Mavericks than he did in the past two combined with Golden State. Its an adjustment the Australian center called tough after another ugly loss, this time to the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.Everyone goes through it [at some stage], Bogut told ESPN. At one point for us [Golden State last season] a loss felt like a 10-game losing streak and then you remember what the real NBA is like, and this [Dallas losing streak] is what its like. You gotta fight and claw, [deal with] injuries ... its an adjustment.As the Mavericks try to climb their way up from the Western Conference cellar without Dirk Nowitzki, at least for the moment,?coach Rick Carlisle has become resigned to experimenting with different lineups trying to find the right on-court combination.Bogut, who served as the Warriors defensive anchor, says hes expected to play a similar role with his new team, although, given that the Mavs have the fifth worst offense in the League right now, the coaches would like for him to look for his shot a little more.They want me to be more aggressive, get to the line, have more confidence shooting at the line which was an issue for me the last two, three years, Bogut said.Defensively Ive been playing real well, and Ive been rebounding the ball well, that third thing I can do to help is improve my scoring.Prior to Mondays game, Bogut was averaging 10.8 rebounds per contest, but only 3.7 points on just 40.7 percent shooting from the field - down from 62.7 last season with Golden State. Bogut says the low percentage doesnt concern him, though. Its not a case of the shooting yips - rather, it speaks to the Mavericks lack of weapons in their depleted state.Theyre all chippies that Ive missed so Im really not too worried, he said. In Golden State you get a lot of dunks because Steph [Curry] and Klay [Thompson] demand so much attention. Its a bit of a shift here.Its been a tumultuous few months for the Aussie that began with the Warriors loss in the Finals.Bogut missed Games 6 and 7 after suffering a knee injury that almost derailed his Olympic campaign. After intense rehabilitation to get himself healthy, Bogut initially believed the Rio Games would be his last national team campaign, but now, especially after the manner in which Australia was denied a medal, he says theres still a slight chance he may come back for another campaign.Possibly, he said. Well see what happens. The formats changed now - I dont know what the hell FIBA is doing, to be honest. Theyve changed the qualification process, but theres probably going to be games during the NBA and NBL seasons, so I wont be playing in those.I think qualifiers start the summer of 2018, so if Im healthy and floating around well see what happens. I havent made a decision wholeheartedly, but as of right now, itd be hard to play another Olympics next season - if there was one.Whether Bogut is a part of the national team moving forward or not, as a veteran of the Boomers squad, he feels the teams future is in great shape with what he calls a good core group of guys.I think with me slowing phasing out, our core group of guys we had in the Olympics, most of the guys are team-first guys, they want to play the right way and thats why we had so much success, he said.Whether you say fourth is success or not from what weve done in the past, but with Benny [Simmons] now, Dante [Exum] getting healthy, then you throw Thon [Maker] in the mix and a couple younger guys ... [Isaac] Humphries at Kentucky. Theres a good pool of players coming up.We still need to keep that Aussie mentality and that culture within the club, which can be hard with guys that [may] be the man on their team in the NBA because they obviously want to come back and be the man on the national team, but its more balanced on the national team. Guys are kind of playing for each other, so thats the challenge were gonna have to face.In Australia you never had to face that challenge because our talent level wasnt as high as the other countries so we had to bring something else to the table which was culture, and physicality and tenacity.We have to make sure that doesnt turn into, oh, we have the best players now, we can kind of relax on our morals.
