New Zealand internationals Cory Jane, Victor Vito and Julian Savea have been dropped by Hurricanes after breaking a curfew last weekend. The trio, along with flanker Ardie Savea and prop Chris Eves, will miss the Super Rugby clash against the Reds on Saturday, live on Sky Sports 3, as a punishment for arriving back late to the team hotel before Hurricanes played the Sharks in Durban. Hurricanes suffered a 32-15 defeat to the South African side - a result which leaves them six points behind New Zealand conference leaders Crusaders. Chris Boyd, the Hurricanes coach, revealed on Thursday that the five players had agreed on a curfew for their two matches in South Africa, but had marginally missed the cut-off time having gone out for the evening. In Durban there is a lot of potential for distraction, he said. The beaches are good, the climate is good, the food is good and everything is cheap. And they had been warned about those distractions. Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd said the players made a poor error of judgement Subsequently on the Tuesday, which was the night before our day off, five players marginally missed that curfew. They were bound by the team protocols and will miss one game.Boyd refused to reveal the exact time of the curfew but said the players had been back before midnight. This was a one out of 10 offence with a 10 out of 10 punishment, he added. But a protocol is still a protocol. Sean Fitzpatrick picks out the biggest and hardest hits from round 11 of Super Rugby Boyd was unsure if the five players had been drinking, but said the team considered alcohol not to be an issue and the punishment had been for not getting back in time.We dont discourage consumption of alcohol, he said. Theyre grown men and they make their own decisions. The reason why they have been stood down is not alcohol related. Victor Vito will also miss the clash against the Queensland Reds Boyd said the reason they did not miss the match against Sharks was that the team had only 27 players in South Africa. Dropping the five would have meant Hurricanes could not have fielded a match-day complement of 23.The five players have apologised to the team and management, with Boyd adding: None of them are happy they have made a poor error of judgement. We have talked internally that it shouldnt be a distraction. We know there will be extra scrutiny so were determined to put a performance on back at the Cake Tin. WASHINGTON -- Daniel Murphy has gotten the best of his former teammates a lot this season. On Tuesday night, though, the New York Mets retired the Nationals second baseman when they need to most.Left-hander Jerry Blevins struck out Murphy with a 3-2 curveball in the 10th inning for his first save since 2012 to seal the Mets 4-3 victory. Washingtons lead in the NL East was cut to nine games.I was trying to put it into play, said Murphy, the former Mets star who has hit safely against them in 18 consecutive games this season and is hitting .411 against his old team. I was unsuccessful.Second baseman T.J. Rivera, in the lineup because of Wilmer Flores stiff neck, homered in the top of the 10th inning to give the Mets the lead for good. Rivera, who had three RBI, drilled an 0-2 pitch with one out in the 10th into the left field seats off Nationals closer Mark Melancon (2-2).The guy was a thorn in our side all night, manager Dusty Baker said. The loss snapped Washingtons four-game winning streak.Jeurys Familia (3-3) earned the victory despite surrendering two runs in the ninth to blow his fourth save of the season.Washington mustered only four hits in the first eight innings, but quickly got to Familia in the ninth. Murphy led off with an infield single, and third baseman Jose Reyes threw Bryce Harpers grounder into the seats. Anthony Rendon and Wilson Ramos then delivered consecutive singles to tie it.Familia then got Ryan Zimmerman to line out and pinch-hitter Clint Robinson to hit a soft liner to second that fooled pinch-runner Wilmer Difo, who was doubled off first.Jeurys is tough, Murphy said. I saw him all year last year from behind him.dddddddddddd.
